Fri, 02 May 2008 09:54:53 PDT- Expectations couldn't be any higher for the Bulldogs, who came out of spring practice surrounded by national championship talk.
Georgia returns most key components from an 11-2 campaign that ended with a 41-10 thrashing of Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.
Junior quarterback Matthew Stafford (2,523 yards, 19 TDs, 10 INTs) and sophomore running back Knowshon Moreno (5.4 yards per carry) give the Bulldogs an incomparable tandem.
The defense, which allowed 20.2 points per game last year, looks faster and deeper. Playmakers abound, starting with linebackers Rennie Curran and Dannell Ellerbe, safety Reshad Jones and cornerback Asher Allen.
The biggest question all spring was the offensive line.

Fri, 02 May 2008 09:54:53 PDT- The knocks on Rich Brooks' Wildcats the last couple of years have been directed at the defensive side of the ball. If this spring is an accurate gauge, that's about to change.
The defense, featuring a hard-hitting, experienced secondary and a star-studded front, dominated the spring. Cornerback Trevard Lindley and defensive end Jeremy Jarmon are All-SEC-caliber players. Braxton Kelley has moved from middle to weak-side linebacker to help fill the big hole left by Wesley Woodyard, the SEC's leading tackler the past two seasons.
Kentucky appears to have all the ingredients for a very good defense this season.
The offense, on the other hand, has some concerns, specifically at quarterback.

Fri, 02 May 2008 09:54:53 PDT-
Steve Spurrier's reputation as an offensive genius is about to be tested again.
His Gamecocks, coming off a 6-6 non-bowl season, looked stout on defense but very unsettled on offense heading into the summer.
Junior Tommy Beecher is the starter at quarterback—for now. He outplayed Chris Smelley in a spring battle that did not include potential star Stephen Garcia, who is suspended until August. Beecher has not thrown than 30 passes in his college career.
His top target will be senior wideout Kenny McKinley, a first-team All-SEC selection in 2007. But after him, the Gamecocks have no proven playmakers. Tight ends Jared Cook and Weslye Saunders, who have shown flashes, must develop into consistent big-play threats if South Carolina is to move...

Fri, 02 May 2008 09:54:53 PDT- When Tennessee's Orange and White Game ended April 19, coach Phillip Fulmer had just one regret.
"I'd like to have about 30 more days of spring practice," he said.
That's because Fulmer left Neyland Stadium feeling good about the team's progress in general and the improvement of the offense in particular. The unit seemed to catch on to the system of new coordinator Dave Clawson as the spring went on, displaying its grasp of things in the spring game.
Junior Jonathan Crompton, who played the last week of spring practice despite an elbow injury which resulted in surgery days after spring practice's end, threw for 266 yards on 13-of-20 passing in the Orange and White Game.

Tennessee athletic trainer Jason McVeigh said in a statement issued Monday after the surgery that Crompton should return to full activity with within three to five weeks.

| Vanderbilt - see all headline |
Fri, 02 May 2008 09:54:53 PDT- Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson is an unabashed optimist, so it's no surprise that he found blue skies in a gray spring for a football program which took some hard injury hits.
Following the team's Black and Gold Scrimmage, which was held to 62 plays as numerous players either played sparingly or not at all, Johnson was in Chuck Tanner "smiley face" mode.
"We didn't get a chance to play some guys because of injuries and couldn't substitute as much as we'd like, but I thought the kids' overall attitude was really good," he said. "Despite the lack of numbers, our guys played hard."
Coach-speak aside, if the 2008 team matches last year's five wins, it will be a significant accomplishment.
